Best diving spots

The star of the show here is the Scalloped Hammerhead Shark, which gathers in large schools around the atoll in April & May to breed. The sight of these majestic creatures gathering together is an experience that cannot fail to excite even the most experienced diver. It is possible to encounter the sharks all round the island, but D’s Wall, which plummets vertically down to unimaginable depths, and Gorgonian Forest are two of the best spots for sightings.

Hammerhead Sharks are not the only large creatures that visit these waters however. Manta Rays & Eagle Rays can be seen at Wrasse Point, while Whitetip Reef Sharks, Nurse Sharks & graceful Leopard Sharks all find food & protection around the atoll, ensuring regular sightings.

Shark’s Cave, as the name suggests, is an excellent place to encounter these residents, while Turtles sometimes put in an appearance at The Tunnel, a coral slope on the south side of the atoll. At Dogtooth Lair, Dogtooth tuna can be seen cruising the blue along with large schools of Barracuda & Trevally.

If you can tear your eyes away from the action, abundant & colourful hard & soft coral gardens provide shelter for a healthy population of reef-fish and many fascinating smaller critters are waiting to be found by the more observant diver.

When to dive

The main dive season here runs from March to August. Outside these months, the island’s only resort is closed. The best months to spot Hammerhead Sharks are April & May.

Getting there

The only way to reach Layang Layang is by flying from Kota Kinabalu in Sabah. Flights are organised by Layang Layang Dive Resort in conjunction with your stay.

Activities

Aside from the diving, the atoll's lagoon area has nice snorkelling and there is a also bird sanctuary, where literally thousands of migratory birds find refuge. There are no beaches to visit and no tourist facilities outside the resort.

Resort and liveaboard options

Layang Layang has one sole dive resort - Layang Layang Dive Resort - that is open from March until August each year. The resort offer packages including accommodation, diving and meals, plus charter flights to and from the island from Kota Kinabalu.

Mergui Archipelago

The 800 islands that comprise the Mergui Archipelago lie just off the coast of Myanmar in the Andaman Sea.

The islands, which can only be reached from Thailand, are only a fairly recent addition to liveaboard diving itineraries, and have not yet been completely explored. Those areas that are now well known to dive operators offer some exceptional diving.

Southern Leyte

Southern Leyte may not be as famous as some of the Philippine's more celebrated diving spots, but don't let that fool you.

Leyte is the most easterly island of the Visayas region, and the island is also the least developed. It boasts exceptional scuba diving.

Currently, diving here is concentrated in Southern Leyte, which is gaining a reputation as one of the best places in the Philippines to see Whale Sharks.

Burma Banks

The Burma Banks in the Andaman Sea are around 200km off the coast of Burma (Myanmar), north-west from the Similan Islands. There are six ‘banks’ - actually the tops of large submerged mountains - Heckford, Coral, Big, Silvertip, Rainbow & Roe.

These underwater mountains were rediscovered in the 1980’s. Before this, their existence was known but their exact location was not.

Tioman & Aur

Around 40km off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, not far from Singapore is the picturesque island of Tioman.

A popular holiday resort for Malaysians & Singaporeans, the steep-sided jungle clad slopes of the island rise straight out the water and smaller islets dot the coastline, making for a spectacular tropical dive spot.

A little to the south is the tiny island of Aur, which while difficult to reach, has good diving.

Tara North

For most people, Borneo conjures up visions of pristine rainforests and incredible wildlife encounters. This is all true, however for scuba divers, the magic continues beneath the blue.

Scuba diving in Borneo promises world-class dive sites, vibrant reefs and incredible marine life, from the green turtles of Sipadan Island to remote and spectacular diving in Borneo Indonesia.

Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat is located on the remote north-western tip of Western Papau in the Halmahera Sea, and fittingly means 'four kings'. It is the most biologically diverse place known to science.

With such natural riches, scuba diving in Raja Ampat is some of the best in the world, particularly for diving on coral reefs. There are some excellent diving resorts in Raja Ampat, but the area is best known for its liveaboard diving.
